MAFA Movie Night - Ed Rossbach

Charles Edmund "Ed" Rossbach (1914 - 2002) worked by hand using ancient techniques like braiding, coiling, netting, and knotting. He studied to be an art teacher but while stationed on the Aleutian Islands during World War Two, he began weaving with grasses. After his military service, Rossbach enrolled at the Cranbrook Academy of Art to study ceramics and weaving under the teaching of textile artist Marianne Strengell.

Rossbach was especially interested in basketry, in particular its historical origins and indigenous styles, and became part of the “new basketry” movement of the 1960s.
